Antivirus for Android – the topic is definitely complicated and has already grown into numerous legends and myths. Is it worth to install them at all? Which applications are worth recommending?
Do we really need a phone anti-virus?
Before proceeding to describe the available solutions, it is worth considering whether we need an antivirus for an Android smartphone. First of all, you need to understand a few rules related to security itself. Currently, computers or smartphones are safe devices and never become infected with malware in a way that is independent of the user. In this case, it is the man who is usually the weakest link.
First of all, do not use open WiFi networks. We rarely talk about security here because we don’t even check the exact name of the network or who it is being shared by. Secondly, it’s important to remember not to click on suspicious links. Phishing, consisting of impersonating a person or institution and phishing valuable information, is now a real scourge, and most often attempts to use it will be seen in our mailbox, private or in this job. Fake invoice, an e-mail from an uncle from Japan who left an inheritance – in this case, you should carefully check the details of the person from whom we received the e-mail, and do not under any circumstances click on suspicious links. The more we should not provide sensitive information there, for example passwords.
It is also worth making sure that you do not click on random ads on the web that redirect us to different pages, or upload unknown files closer to your smartphone. Paradoxically, the whole treatment procedure can be quite complicated. Phone antivirus will also not be necessary if we identify exactly what we are installing. This is where we go to the next point.
Why anti-virus on android can be a trap?
After entering the phrase in the Play Store type anti-virus or anti-virus for android, we will be presented with a rich list of suggestions, which in principle and according to the name are to ensure cyber security. At least that’s how it looks. In practice, unfortunately, many applications among them are nothing but programs with malicious code. I have to honestly admit that Google is trying to fight such “fake” proposals, but the problem is still visible, and we find out about it, seeing more news about malware in some apps. It turns out that regularly checking applications before entering them in the store is not enough. The very popularity of this system also has a significant impact on such attacks on Android.
This is similar for other programs. Most often, however, these are poor copies of other applications or from little-known developers, and in this case it is not worth suggesting a large number of downloads. In addition, such counterfeit anti-viruses do not work. What’s worse, this problem also applies to other anti-viruses on phones and as numerous tests indicate, including AV-Test, rarely can we count on high efficiency in recognizing a potential threat. Most often they are based on searching for suspicious file names or searching for certain elements that they already have in their database. The genre classic also displays alerts about non-existent security. In this case, saving on security may be a risky move, for which we will then have to pay.
Summary of the most trusted programs
Due to the large number of applications with low trust, I decided to present below a list of the most reliable proposals. It should be borne in mind, however, that they cannot be expected to be 100% effective and we are the most important link in the cyber security chain.
Bitdefender Mobile Security
An effective tool when it comes to blocking and fighting malware on your smartphone. The software also offers a well-constructed anti-theft module, provides online protection and tips on how to take care of your privacy online. I also enjoy the possibility of using a VPN. This is not the most comprehensive software, but it works well in its role.
Kaspersky Internet Security for Android
Completely refined software that effectively recognizes malware on your device. The developers have also provided a lot of additional functions, such as blocking calls, anti-theft functions, website filter, phone locator, but most people are tempted by the availability of the free version of the program.
McAfee Mobile Security
First of all, this antivirus offers very good effectiveness in detecting potential threats. It also assists the user in browsing websites and warns of potential danger. There are also anti-theft features, tools to optimize the operation of the device or options that emphasize privacy on the web.
Norton Mobile Security
Symantec has also prepared an effective anti-virus for Android. First of all, it effectively cares for the user’s safety, allows blocking the device in the event of theft or backing up. What’s more, it can send alerts when connected to an unsecured WiFi network. Users will also appreciate the warning about harmful adware in the application they are downloading from the Play Store.
Sophos Mobile Security for Android
An interesting proposition with a rich arsenal of functions. It protects against spam and can detect suspicious attempts from the application, including access to user’s private files. In addition to scanning, we also find the ability to remotely block the device, its locator or the option to delete data.
The application is available free for download.
Free Android antivirus can tempt you. Especially tempting to many users sounds the first word, but it should be borne in mind that often such catches are just a nicely dressed trap. For mobile devices, the basis is to remember about the safe use of the telephone and network resources. It is also worth checking what permissions the program requires. We will occasionally come across an amazing connection, like a network game that requires access to a microphone, contact list and camera. Fortunately, we can block some things by ourselves from the settings.
