Ryzen Threadripper 3000, Ryzen 3950X and Athlon 3000G

We finally got it! AMD has prepared a strong blow to the segment of the most efficient gaming computers and workstations.

AMD Ryzen 3000 processors have been extremely successful – this is confirmed not only by independent tests, but also by great sales results. However, the manufacturer does not intend to let go and has prepared the premiere of more units. The announced top models Ryzen and Ryzen Threadripper debut on the market and one surprise for people with a more modest budget.

Ryzen Threadripper 3000, i.e. a strong blow to workstations

We start with the premiere of new Threadrippers, i.e. the most efficient consumer processors in the producer's offer – just in time if you submit a powerful workstation (and you have the right budget).

The new units are based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture and are produced in 7-nanometer lithography (+ nucleus with I / O interfaces at 12 nanometers). At the beginning, only two models were presented – the 24-core / 48-thread Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and the 32-core / 64-thread Ryzen Threadripper 3970X. Lobbying is said that this is just the beginning and the manufacturer may have plans for even more efficient units.

What changes compared to the previous series? First of all, higher clock speed, faster RAM memory controller, more third-level cache and PCI-Express controller with version 4.0 lines. Unfortunately, the TDP ratio has also been increased from 250 to 280 W.

AMD boasts of processor performance – their performance was matched with the competitive Core i9-9980XE model (18 cores / 36 threads). It is true that his successor – Core i9-10980XE – recently debuted, but it is not yet available on the market, so the manufacturer could not check its performance.

The results were easy to predict – the new Threadrippers easily beat the top Core i9. It is worth noting, however, that they are also clearly more expensive (Intel processor has recently been available at a clearly lower price).

Ryzen Threadripper 3000 processors work with new motherboards with sTRX4 base and TRX40 chipset. The new platform is even more functional, and disc producers will be able to form the basis of a solid workstation (88 PCI-Express 4.0 lines in total are available).

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X - performance

The new Threadrippers are an offer for the most demanding and wealthy clients. Processor prices have been slightly increased compared to previous generations – the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X was priced at $ 1399, and the Ryzen Threadripper 3970X at $ 1999.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X – the new king of the mainstream platform

The manufacturer also revealed new details about the Ryzen 9 3950X – the top representative of ordinary Ryzen. The unit will interest people assembling an efficient gaming computer or workstation.

The unit is even higher than the Ryzen 9 3900X tested by us. It is worth noting, however, that this is a completely different segment than the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X (not only in terms of price, but also the functionality of the platform).

Ryzen 9 3950X will be sold without a cooler, and the manufacturer recommends using AiO cooling with a 280 mm cooler here. Importantly, the processor can also be switched to Eco-Mode (the TDP ratio will be reduced here from 105 to 65 W).

In the energy-saving mode we have to reckon with a clear decrease in performance. On the other hand, the processor consumes much less power here and is much cooler. Ryzen 9 3950X in Eco-Mode will therefore be the perfect solution for building a miniature and very efficient set.

How does top Ryzen compare to the competition?

In games in 1080p resolution it achieves similar performance to the Core i9-9900K (it is a pity that it was not compared to a bit better Core i9-9900KS, but probably during tests it was not available on the market yet).

When it comes to professional applications, it easily overcomes Core i9-9900K, and even a 12-core / 24-thread Core i9-9920X (this one should be available at a similar price at reduced prices).

Athlon 3000G – the hit of cheap computer sets

At the end we have a surprise for people assembling cheaper computers for home and office. The manufacturer has released official details about the economic model Athlon 3000G.

The new processor should offer capabilities similar to the tested Athlon 240GE model, and at the same time be much cheaper (the suggested price is only $ 49 – less than the initial price of the Athlon 200GE). The unit is based on the improved Zen + microarchitecture and was made in 12-nanometer lithography.

AMD Athlon 3000G vs Intel Pentium G5400 - performance

How's the new Athlon coming? AMD compared it to the competitive Pentium G5400. The "blue" unit is much weaker in games and programs, and at the same time much more expensive.

Athlon 3000G has one more advantage – the officially unlocked multiplier, so it can be additionally turned up. When increasing the clock speed from 3.5 to 3.9 GHz, we should get a specific increase in performance. The competition model does not allow such "tricks".

AMD intends to master the top performance segment

The July premiere of new Ryzens shook up the computer market a lot. AMD is following the blow and is about to launch a specific "blue" bang – this time the manufacturer has set a target for the top performance segment, where the competition technologically lags far behind (and there are many indications that in the near future it will not be able to prepare a meaningful answer) .

So it turns out that the Ryzen 9 3900X and 3950X, i.e. the top models from the mainstream platform, will fight with the high-end Core X systems. Again, the high-end Ryzen Threadripper models will not have any competition on the Intel side. In this situation, the top segment will be completely mastered by AMD.

Sides slides, but are the new processors really as good as the manufacturer claims? We will find out after the store premiere and independent performance tests. The first, "to warm up", is to debut Athlon 3000G. Later it will be the turn to hit – Ryzen 9 3950X and Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X. It will happen!
